In order to take advantage of sandwich leave, employees must have sufficient leave credits in their leave bank. As a result, employees will need to take some leave (e.g. annual leave) before the sandwich leave can begin.

In order to take sandwich leave, employees must request permission from their employer. Leave of this nature is only usually granted if the employee is not able to take the desired period of leave without having to resign.
